Redriff’s History Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum:

  • inspires pupils and gives them a sense of excitement from learning about their place in the history of human civilisation
  • helps pupils to understand their identity and builds a sense of belonging by recognising their story within the local community, the history of Britain and the wider world
  • combines both knowledge about the past and knowledge about how to investigate the past so that pupils can construct claims, arguments and accounts
  • provides pupils with knowledge of how past societies in Britain and the wider world were built, operated and changed over time and how these societies influenced others.
  • enables pupils to make connections and comparisons with contemporary society.
  • introduces pupils to the core historical concepts that are revisited over time in different contexts so that pupils have the opportunity to build and strengthen their understanding of these key ideas.

Redriff’s History Curriculum Implementation

Our curriculum:

  • is topic based with cross-curricular links
  • combines a well-sequenced, rich body of substantive knowledge, historical skills, concepts and the school’s golden threads
  • has an emphasis on enquiry where children investigate historically framed questions linked to the National Curriculum
  • builds experiential knowledge through museum visits, handling artefacts and carefully planned fieldwork
  • is underpinned by ambitious, high-quality vocabulary
  • is designed and informed by subject specialists, subject organisations and museums in the locality
  • is adapted to meet the needs of all pupils
  • is assessed with pre and post learning tasks

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
